Housekeeper explains how to remove stains from a mattress without harsh chemicals

Nov 28, 2023Nov 28, 2023

The average person spends around eight hours on their mattress every night, meaning dirt, dust, dead skin cells, sweat and oil will build up if not thoroughly cleaned every few months.

Mattress buildup can cause yellow stains and cause people to feel stuffy or uncomfortable even if they are sleeping on a freshly laundered bed.

Luckily, one cleaning expert has explained how to clean a mattress with a simple cleaning solution with ingredients you likely already have in your home. Not only will this method clean a mattress but will remove any stubborn stains in the fabric.

Vanesa Amaro is a housekeeper who describes herself as the “queen of cleaning” and enjoys posting online about the best cleaning methods for tricky areas in your household.

In a recent TikTok video, Vanesa said: “I’m a housekeeper and I will show you how to remove stains from your mattress with things you already have a home”.

In order to make the cleaning solution you will need a toothbrush, a spray bottle, two cups of water, five drops of dish soap and one cup of hydrogen peroxide.

Hydrogen peroxide is the most effective way to clean your mattress as it should clean stains and dust mines without leaving harmful residue. The dish soap you use should not have any colour so it does not dye the mattress and will work best if it is a natural brand.

Vanesa also explained that you can “add five drops of your favourite essential oil” to the cleaning solution, but it should be noted that some essential oils such as eucalyptus, citrus and peppermint can be harmful to both cats and dogs. It is important to do your research before spraying essential oil solutions around your home if you have a family pet.

Once the cleaning solution has been mixed in the spray bottle, it is time to use on your mattress. Vanesa said: “Gently mix and you’re good to go!

“Now, add a few sprays and use your toothbrush to brush it out. Grab a white towel and blot the stain out. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.”

In Vanesa’s video comment section, many people were amazed at the cleaning results.

One user said: “Literally standing over my bed trying to figure out how to get this stain out. You are a goddess!!!” Another person said: “My husband just spilled coffee on the mattress, I am trying this but I’m using his toothbrush.”

In the comments, Vanesa said this cleaning hack should work on coffee stains, and assured one user it will also work on any blood stains for any woman who has a “monthly accident.”

One other commentator wrote: “I just tried this out RIGHT NOW and it freaking works! I’m so amazed!”

Someone else wrote: “My brother got chocolate all over his mattress, I tried this and it worked wonders for me!”
